ABS and PBT keycaps can sound different, but the material label alone cannot tell you which will sound deeper or quieter. Thickness, profile, switches, and the keyboard all matter to the comparison. When someone says PBT sounds better, ask which ABS set they compared it with.
What do ABS and PBT mean?
Both are plastics used for keycaps. ABS stands for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene; PBT stands for polybutylene terephthalate. CORSAIR's material overview also discusses surface wear and feel. A smooth surface under your finger, however, is a different observation from a deep sound in your ears.
Keep notes about texture, color, and price separate from your sound notes. Deciding which material is “better” first can make it harder to describe the particular sound you enjoyed.
Read the specifications beside the material
Keychron's explanation of keycaps and sound includes thickness, shape, and the surrounding keyboard components. Use a separate line for each condition.

Double-shot is not a substitute for a material specification. Read material and manufacturing as separate fields, and leave missing details marked as unknown.
What if the PBT set is thin and the ABS set is thick?
Imagine two fictional sets. Set A is thin PBT. Set B is thicker ABS with a different profile. On the same keyboard, you find B sounds fuller.
Your useful conclusion is “B sounded fuller on this keyboard.” Expanding that to “ABS sounds deeper than PBT” removes the fact that thickness and profile changed too. The same problem applies if A sounds fuller.
Comparing two actual products can still help you choose between them. Choosing a set and isolating a material's effect are different questions. Even closely matched products may differ in mass or internal structure, so similar specifications do not make a perfect material experiment.
Five checks for a typing video
Read the recording details before relying on the ABS or PBT label in the title.
- Same board and switches? If not, treat it as a comparison of complete setups.
- Same kind of key? Do not compare a letter key in one clip with a spacebar in another.
- Known profile and thickness? Keep missing specifications marked as unknown.
- Same recording conditions? Look for microphone position, gain, and processing details.
- Same playback device? Start at a low volume and keep your playback setup consistent. Equal device volume does not mean equal source levels.
Write “louder,” “brighter at the start,” and “shorter tail” as separate observations. This helps you describe what changed without using volume as a stand-in for character. For sound vocabulary, see thocky, clacky, and creamy explained.
What to ask when the product page is incomplete
Specific questions are easier to answer than “Does it sound good?”
- What are the profile and wall thickness of this set?
- Which keyboard and switches were used in the sound sample?
- Does it fit my keyboard's stems, layout, and spacebar size?

What does material mean in KeyKey?
Keycaps in the KeyKey app are digital collectibles. Their artwork suggests a texture, and you can explore their associated app sounds. Those sounds are not acoustic measurements of physical ABS or PBT.
We have not included an ABS-versus-PBT audio test here because we do not have controlled physical recordings for this comparison. You can instead use the KeyKey typing sound samples to practice describing a clear attack or rounded ending. These are designed app sounds.
