A keycap profile can change typing sound, but the labels Cherry, OEM, SA, and XDA cannot tell you which set will sound deeper or quieter. Profile is a name for height, top shape, and whether each row is sculpted. The comparison only becomes useful when internal space, wall thickness, switches, and the keyboard stay in view.
What is a keycap profile?
Profile describes how tall a cap is, how the top is shaped, and whether row heights change across the board. Keychron's OEM versus Cherry guide presents OEM as the taller sculpted option and Cherry as a lower sculpted option. How-To Geek's overview of keycap shape separates tall, spherical sculpted profiles such as SA from uniform profiles such as XDA, where every row shares one height.
A lower feel under the finger is not the same observation as a lower pitch in the ear. Keep comfort, looks, and price in a separate note from the sound.
Four names, one comparison table
Keychron's note on keycaps and sound also asks you to look at shape, thickness, and the surrounding parts. Split the conditions instead of attaching a tone to the name.

Two products can share a name and still differ in height or cavity. The table is a reading aid, not a ranking of sound.
What if only the profile changed?
Imagine two fictional sets. Set A is Cherry-profile PBT. Set B is SA-profile PBT with no published wall thickness. On the same keyboard, B sounds more resonant.
The useful note is “B sounded more resonant on this keyboard.” Expanding that to “SA is deeper than Cherry” drops the chance that cavity, thickness, and mass changed together. The same limit applies if A sounds fuller.
Choosing a set and isolating a profile's effect are different questions. Matching the plastic name still leaves thickness, stem length, and inner geometry free to vary. The material-side version of this trap is covered in our ABS versus PBT comparison.
Five checks for a typing video
Read the recording details before trusting the profile word in the title.
- Same board and switches? If not, treat it as a comparison of complete setups.
- Same row and the same kind of key? Sculpted profiles change height by row. Do not pair a letter key with a spacebar.
- Known material and thickness? Keep missing specifications marked as unknown.
- Same recording conditions? Look for microphone position, gain, and processing details.
- Same playback device? Start at a low volume and keep the playback setup consistent.

What to ask when the product page is incomplete
Specific questions are easier to answer than “Does it sound good?”
- What is the profile name, and is a letter-key height published?
- Which keyboard, switches, and key row were used in the sample?
- Does it fit my stems, layout, and spacebar size?

What does profile mean in KeyKey?
Keycaps in the KeyKey app are digital collectibles. Artwork can suggest height or texture, and you can explore the associated app sounds. Those sounds are not acoustic measurements of physical Cherry, OEM, SA, or XDA sets.
We have not included a profile audio test here because we do not have controlled physical recordings for this comparison. You can instead use the KeyKey typing sound samples to practice describing a clear attack or rounded ending. These are designed app sounds.
